Weekly tournament
Tournaments
Each week, a theme, a champion. XP multiplier, Sunday evening podium.

Weekly tournaments are a competition open to the entire AgapePlay community. Every Monday at 00:00 UTC, a theme is announced (the Beatitudes, Psalms of trust, Paul in prison, etc.). Until Sunday 23:59, all XP earned on verses tied to that theme counts double for the leaderboard. Monday morning, podium and medals.
It’s the only competitive mechanic on AgapePlay that ranks everyone together, not just your group or cell. It’s also the most effective way to discover verses you wouldn’t have thought of.
How it unfolds
- Monday 00:00 UTC — New tournament. Theme appears on your dashboard (“Tournament: the Beatitudes”). The ×2 multiplier activates on all Matthew 5:3-12 verses.
- All week — Play normally, but sessions on themed verses count double. Live leaderboard visible at
/tournaments. - Sunday 23:59 UTC — Tournament closes. Final standings frozen.
- Monday 00:00 UTC — Podium announced, medals to top 3, top 100 receive a badge. New tournament launches.
Who it’s for
Tournaments speak to competitive personalities who need external goals to stay motivated. They also speak to the curious — even without aiming for podium, having a spotlight theme each week guides your reviews toward verses you wouldn’t have chosen alone.
- Competitive — aim for top 10, compare your progress to the whole community
- Curious — let the weekly programming guide you, use tournaments as a community reading plan
- Veterans — those who know the Bible already and are reviewing rather than learning
Theme selection
Themes are defined by the AgapePlay team on a 52-theme yearly rotation. They follow both the liturgical calendar (Lent, Advent, Easter, Christmas) and biblical themes (prayer, suffering, faith, creation). Past themes are archived and replayable solo.
Difference from other modes
Tournaments don’t involve direct relationships with other players (no live buzzer, no duel). It’s the most anonymous and non-intrusive of AgapePlay’s multiplayer modes. You play alone, but your score measures against the whole community. Ideal for those who want the social dimension of ranking without the social dimension of direct interaction.
FAQ
Is a subscription required? No, tournaments are free and open to all. Disciple and Pastor subscribers get a slightly higher XP multiplier (×2.5 instead of ×2).
When is the next theme announced?
Sunday evening for the following Monday. You can see the upcoming theme at /tournaments from Saturday.
Do off-theme sessions count? They earn normal XP for your account but don’t enter the tournament leaderboard. To appear on the leaderboard, play verses linked to the week’s theme.
